Interview with Jenny Harada, Part 1

Whenever I find softies that are really cool like Jenny's are, I'm always curious about the person behind the softie -- her vision, her life, her hopes and dreams...I think people are so interesting, and especially creative people. Maybe the best part about starting this blog is the opportunity to interview artists and get a little look behind the curtain, and in Jenny's case, behind the (Halloween!) mask. Here's Part 1 of my interview with Jenny Harada where she fills in the blanks:
My childhood ambition: I always dreamed of being an Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics or figure skating. My aunt's grandfather won a bronze in some random track event and I was in awe of that thing.
My fondest memory: My wedding day. We had a costume wedding. Did you ever see Darth Vader and Wonder Woman and Bert from Sesame Street hanging out together? Imagine that +150.
My favorite soundtrack: The Sound of Music (the movie). I think I know all the words.
My retreat: A deep deep bathtub filled with steaming hot water and bubbles and relaxing scented oils where can I sit for a long time and dream of improbable fantastic things like magic matter altering chambers and having super powers.
My wildest dream: Awake or asleep? Awake I often dream of having a matter altering chamber, and the things I could create with it. Mostly these days I imagine using it as a factory to make more dolls! Asleep I've created entire alternative realities for my life and the whole world as we know it, that seemed so real that I wasn't sure when I really woke up. I have a lot of weirdo dreams. I had a phase once where I sleep walked a lot and created art in my sleep too. Sometimes I still find sketches on my night table in the morning that I don't remember doing.
My proudest moment: When I gave birth to my sweetie-pie Lukas.

Cheeky Little Monkey!

Cheeky Little Monkey is my new favorite phrase! I think it's more used in the UK as in 'Amanda, get your face out of the peanut butter jar, you cheeky little monkey, you!' My favorite late night talk show guy, Craig Ferguson says it all the time. So what does that have to do with softies? Well, it seems to me to be the perfect phrase to encompass the variety of softies out there: some are cute, some sweet, some funny and some are little monsters! And starting today, I'm making a weekly section called "Cheeky Little Monkey" featuring a softie maker and his/her Cheekly Little Monkey collection.

This week it's Jenny Harada! Jenny is a talented artist with an original vision and sense of humor. Here are some of her softies:

Jenny is also one of the organizers of Plush Rush, a softie gallery and sale held this past December in Columbus, Ohio. Too bad it wasn't a touring show! Also check out her really unique plush Halloween masks - it's never too early to start planning your outfit!
